How to win an argument with a loved one

-
There is a trick to winning an argument against a loved one: Realize that the person with whom you seem to be arguing is not your real opponent.  Your real opponent is a Relationship Demon, an invisible entity that tricks you and your loved ones into destroying one another.

How can you dispel the illusion? Look deeply into the argument that is taking place and see whether you are actually in disagreement about a particular issue.  If two intelligent people have different opinions about a particular issue, they should be able to use good communication to weigh the advantages of each option and decide on a course of action. Just be logical, and if you really can't decide then just give in, because you love this person so what the hell.  And if it is so important that you cannot give in, then you will have to make a subtle manipulation.  But there is never any reason to keep hurting each other with argument.

Usually, what happens is not even that complicated.  Most arguments involve two people who think they are disagreeing when they actually are not.  Two people comment on a particular topic, and then the Relationship Demon tricks them into thinking the two things they said are mutually exclusive when they actually are not.  It's like this:

We go to the park, and I say, "The birds are singing."
You say, "Um, actually, the grass is green."

And neither of us got any validation for what we have said, so we just devolve into total idiots as the demon's spell takes effect:

I say, "What do you mean the birds are not singing?"
And you say, "I don't know where you are getting your information, but what I said is definitely true."
And I say, "Oh my god I can't believe you are so stupid," because I can actually still hear the birds singing, so it is ridiculous for us to even be arguing about this.
-
Relationship demons are very tricky.  When they are in the room with you and your significant other, you might agree 80% about something and disagree 20%, but the demon makes it so that you can only be aware of the part that is disagreement.

Here is a trick for winning an argument with a loved one. First, explain to her or him about the relationship demon and how it is playing a trick on you both. Then, use the following three steps:
  1. Try to identify, as many times as possible, the parts of her argument that you can accept and validate.
  2. If you get the opportunity, the greatest thing you can do is admit you were wrong about some aspect of the argument.  Do that, and you gain a kind of invincibility against the demon.
  3. Try to express in a sentence what you seem to be disagreeing about, and invite your loved one to correct the sentence if it seems wrong.
After you agree on a sentence that expresses the disagreement, be logical together until the demon is dead. You'll know it is dead when you feel warmth toward one another instead of negative emotions.

Writer's Block

-
People use the term "writer's block" when they want to complain about not being able to get inspired for a writing project. Actually, it is not specific to writing; a musician, painter, or any other kind of artist can feel blocked.

The energy of inspiration can be felt by the reader if it is present in the paragraph. I don't know how it happens, but it does. I had it when I wrote the first sentence of this paragraph, and if you reread the sentence you can feel it a little. When you have the energy of inspiration, rhythmic sentences spill out of the mind naturally.

"For score and seven years ago..."
"What a marvelous night for a moondance..."
"Absence makes the heart grow fonder..."

Some sentences have that energy. You know when you have them. Write them down. And do not pretend you can force them to come if you feel blocked. Work with your words even though you are blocked, but do not let any uninspired words appear in your final draft.

And never revise inspired words out of your writing project to accommodate a change you are making. The inspired words are the most important.

Another way to infuse a project with inspiration is to make it a collaborative project. Like music played by a band instead of a soloist, collaborative writing compounds the energy it creates. You can send your project to my inspired colleagues at DoctorMyDocument and let us add our own touch of inspiration with the $40 trial.

Dear Friends,

Thanks for looking at our post. Students often struggle with academic writing in high school and college, and it can cause them to form negative perceptions about their intelligence and ability.
--
Our goal is to empower students by using writing assignments as OPPORTUNITIES to teach important principles and build intellectual enthusiasm.
--
Increased Confidence
Powerful Writing
Critical Thinking
Grammar and Composition
Web-Research
Poetry, Prose, Persuasion, Narration, Speeches and Rhetoric
---
Perhaps you are concerned about a struggling student, or perhaps your student is thriving in school and you want to enhance his/her ability by taking a proactive step.
---
We provide "scaffolding" (based on Vygotski's "Zone of Proximal Development") to support students while they gain new writing skills. By directing them to apply principles of grammar and style along with great study/research strategies, we make their work easier and more educational.
---
The student likes getting the help, and the parent likes knowing that an additional teacher is working to empower their child.
---
This is the kind of service you need to try in order to assess. You can use our $40 TRIAL for your student's first correspondence with us.
--
Each session involves email correspondence over the course of several days and consists of consultation, guidance, editing & proofreading, and review.
---
A 10% DISCOUNT is available for those who pay for five sessions in advance.
---
TYPICAL SESSION
Step 1: The student sends us a writing project and asks one or more questions.
Step 2: We provide answers, guidance, and direction for "taking the first step."
Step 3: The student completes all or part of the assignment and sends it to us for corrections and feedback.
Step 4: We answer any questions and reflect with the student on the important principles that have been learned.

Most importantly, the student is empowered psychologically.
--
During a typical session, we might correspond with the student via email THREE TO FIVE times, spending a total of about 2.5 hours:
1.) Helping the student to correctly interpret the requirements,
2.) Providing advice that makes academic writing easy and fun,
3.) Making corrections and giving feedback,
4.) Reviewing and reflecting on the principles that have been learned.

In college, the student will always know that his or her education was "elite" in the sense that professional writer/editors were used to supplement their formal education.
As an adult, the student will realize and fully appreciate the proactive steps you took to ensure his or her success.

Let the Reader Wonder

Make your message resound in the mind of the reader.  How can you get good acoustics in there? It's the same as trying to get a nice sound in any other room: you can improve acoustic conditions by emptying out the room. When 100% of the reader's attention is on one thing, it makes a powerful impression.

Consider this sentence:

The children were hurting my head.

Add another item for the reader to consider or remember, and the attention is divided. It may be necessary to add more words when trying to be informative, but be careful when being informative, because information encumbers the reader:

The children were playing an awkward tune on some flutes they had been given for Christmas, and the shrill noise was hurting my head.

This sentence is more informative, but it is not as fun to read -- not as intriguing.  Also, I hope it gets good gas mileage, because it takes a long time to go from point A to point B. This has more power: The children were hurting my head.
So, informative details are not always helpful. Sometimes, it is best to let the reader wonder.

Strategic Writing: Trim away unnecessary words.

Let's give this sentence a complete makeover:

#1.) Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president of the United States, was shot by a killer named Boothe.

#2.) Abraham Lincoln was shot by a killer named Boothe.

Sentence #2 is more powerful, because it is not weighed down by unnecessary words. Big, fat, heavy sentences that cannot hold their own weight are very cumbersome to the reader. They are tedious to read and interpret.

Taking this idea a step further, let the reader sometimes do the work of interpreting what you write.  Don't spoon feed them and rob them of the opportunity to experience their own insight. For example:

#1.) The sound of the piano will always remind me of my dead little brother, who enjoyed playing piano very much. I like to visit his grave and play a little tune on an electric keyboard.

#2.) The sound of the piano will always remind me of my dead little brother. I like to visit his grave and play a little tune.

Example #2 is not as informative, but it let's the reader achieve a profound state of mind.  You want the reader to have a profound state of mind when reading.  Let the reader do some of the work. Let her wonder.

Make it your priority that you give the reader images and concepts without a lot of unnecessary detail.  Do not waste a single word.

If you want to get involved with strategic writing lessons, you can visit us! (DoctorMyDocument.com).

Document Editing: Time Management Rule #1

The most important time management practice is list-making.

You are already multitasking when you become aware of something more that you are required to do.  You cannot do it now, but you also cannot afford to have it on your mind -- because it will take up too much memory in your brain computer and slow your processing speed.

How can you avoid letting your brain computer get knocked offline when an additional task is added?

Step One: Write it on the list that you keep in your pocket.

Step Two: Completely forget about it and get back to what you were doing. In this way, you skillfully fend off interruptions.

Step Three: Do not keep it as a file or email message to yourself. Keep it in your pocket (see step 2)

***Special Warning: Do not let yourself become intimidated by your list of things to do. It's lucky you are even keeping it.
***If you need to delegate some work to professional writers (starts at $40), click here.

Lost List of Things
I write the list of things to do.
Weighing the sum of the whole lot.
I might have missed half of that shit
If I never polluted the pad with my burdens.

Responsibility weighs me down.
But I keep my head down in the work.
I don’t even look at that stupid pad
Until I have to add an entry or see what’s next.

I hate that pad that keeps me okay
With its things to do and its
Condescending ways
of talking to me.

But when I lost it one day,
And I had no idea what things there were to do
Or what was required of me…
I think something snapped sideways in my mind.

Ghostwriting in the Information Age

-
He lives in a creative haze that smells like incense and coffee,
Delivers a document, somebody pays – in a sense his lifestyle is carefree.
Nevertheless, he is uninsured and preoccupied with projects,
And the I.R.S. is always snooping and trying to take his paychecks,

“Five large and empty” are not real at all.
Our important concerns are fleeting like a dream.
He just turns his attention to the project that pays
And helps that client follow in folly the story of life situations.

The ghostwriter has no need for contracts.
Clients pay each week on a given day.
Nobody ever asks for money back,
But if they do, they can take it and go away.

At the time of this writing, approximately seven million Americans are unemployed.  I am not one of them; I make my bread by spewing the sacred word.  I don’t know any words that are particularly sacred; all words are sacred, because they are the tools of my trade and the product I provide.  With words and my laptop, I can always be okay and have some extra money for family.

If you want to get involved with ghostwriting, we can help!  It'll cost you $40 if you want us to assess your skill and provide consultation.

Some projects are very difficult, but not as difficult as submitting the authority of some foolish manager or superior officer.  People can just leave me alone. I write documents, and nobody needs to tell me when and how to do that. And if you need a document written or edited, please send it to support@DoctorMyDocument.com

Public Speaking Ninja

-
Speaking to multiple listeners is like fighting multiple opponents.  You don't have to worry about all the opponents, because only one can invade your personal space at a time. Knock out one after another as they trip over each other's feet.

When speaking in front of a group, you can have similar bold confidence. Speaking to one listener is no different from speaking in front of several.  Just talk slowly so you can use a rhythm you like, and speak from the belly instead of from the throat.  Smile. Look at all the faces like so many interesting fish in a fish tank.  Smile. You are a public speaking ninja.

What is the correct way to use a semi-colon?

Some writers use a dash when they should use a semi-colon, and others do the opposite.  There are actually several uses for each. You can Google around to find out all the details, but these two ideas are very useful and easy to remember:

1.) Connecting independent clauses with a semi-colon
A semi-colon is used the way a period is used:  to connect independent clauses.
"Jose won the contest. Everyone expected him to win."
"Jose won the contest; everyone expected him to win."

**An independent clause is a group of words that could be a complete sentence if they wanted to be, even though they might choose to be part of a longer sentence. Do not use a dash to connect independent clauses. Use a semi-colon!

2.) A dash works like a comma, but a really big one.  A dash is very useful for managing long sentences, especially ones that already contain a few commas -- this sentence being an example -- because using a set of 2 dashes can help you to avoid using lots of confusing commas.    So, a dash is like a really big comma that takes itself too seriously.

Another example:
Jose won the contest, an impressive accomplishment, and although he felt good about the victory he could not help thinking about the disappointment his opponent must have felt.
This could be written with dashes:
Jose won the contest -- an impressive accomplishment -- and although he felt good about the victory he could not help thinking about the disappointment his opponent must have felt.
If the sentence needed to be longer, the dashes would be extra helpful for keeping the sentence clear:
Jose won the contest, an impressive accomplishment, and although he felt good about the victory he could not help thinking about the disappointment his opponent must have felt -- because this contest occurs only once every four years.
In this last example, you can see that the dash works just like a comma.  It is useful, though, for helping the reader to compartmentalize the many parts of the sentence and think about it in an organized way.  Part of being a good writer is the ability to accommodate the reader's quirky attention.

NOTE: This is not a complete explanation for the uses of the dash and semi-colon.  There are other uses; for example, a semi-colon is often used to separate items on a list. In this blog, we just wanted to share the insights above and leave you with this easy-to-remember concept:

"A dash works like a comma that takes itself too seriously, and a semi-colon works like a period that does not take itself seriously enough."

Readers love figuring things out on their own.

Use brevity.

I value brevity so much that I sometimes say, "Medium regular!" even though I actually prefer milk instead of cream.

Brevity is important, because "less is more" when writing Web content. Less information is more fun. Same as in school. Readers don't really want to hear what I have to say, so I just say something rhythmic, and their minds imagine images. Chicken finger. Readers love figuring things out on their own. Uncooked, Chinese chicken finger dough takes ten minutes to chew.

Every sentence is work for the reader. It's just like toxins in food. You cannot eat without getting toxins, and you cannot write sentences without detracting from the reader's experience.  The best way is to not write anything at all and instead leave the reader alone to enjoy bliss in the present moment.

But if you must write something, use brevity.

Mindfulness practice is all about multitasking - meditation while doing something.

If you want to practice meditation, you can do it!

Don’t say you don’t have time for meditation. There is a kind of meditation you can practice while doing things. It’s mindfulness practice. Mindfulness practice is meditation while doing things. It’s like multitasking. Read about it in a book by Thich Nhat Hanh, or Google around about various forms of meditation-in-action, such as the Japanese tea ceremony, Zen archery, Iaijutsu, Ikebana (flower arranging) and any of the “do” (i.e. “Way): Shiatsu-do, Kendo, Judo, Karate-do, Shodo -- and likewise, we are developing our own mindfulness art: the “Step Aside" of writing and Document Kung Fu.

Meditative art forms are based on mindfulness practice. It's physical practice done in a meditative way.  Jon Kabat-Zinn has written that to look at something in a meditative way is to look at it without judging it. That means the voice of the mind is silent, and 100% of your attention can be directed toward enjoying the clear, hypnotic experience of the present moment.

Doctor My Document philosophy is influenced by the teachers of this kind of meditation-in-action....
Look at Thich Nhat Hanh’s books about mindfulness; look at Eckhart Toll’s The Power of Now; look at the famous book by Eugene Herrigel, Zen in the Art of Archery. Do you know the one I’m talking about? Herrigel writes about his meditation training in Japan, which began with the practice of Zen Archery. Anyway, the point is that meditation can be ongoing. You can meditate while you do things.

The idea is not as esoteric as some people think. It's just good, old-fashioned concentration.  Can you feel the material of your shirt on your shoulders right now?  Are you aware of the clear, sharp detail in the scenery of your peripheral vision?  I am not, but as I become more skilled at meditation in action I will become more mindful of these things.

The practice starts with awareness of your breathing. Breath meditation is something usually done in a seated position.  Be aware of the breathing. Be aware when you swallow saliva. Be aware of the stability of your posture, and be aware enough to know whether you are holding unnecessary muscle tension as the result of emotional duress. Be aware of the upright, relaxed posture and the looseness of the elastic lungs.

Bring all your awareness into the body. That means you need to temporarily forget about the crap or your life situation. Now, in mindfulness practice, or meditation-in-action, you simply add one more thing to pay attention to.  It's the action.  Use a simple action over which you can pour your whole attention. Try meditation while walking first, because that is one of the most profound mindfulness practices.  Mindful of the breath, the body, the penetrating sensation of relaxation and energy filling the body like a balloon, relaxing it.

It’s a simple matter of multitasking. Do your work, but keep some attention on balanced posture, profound breathing, and electric relaxation that penetrates all tension, down to the bone.

If you need help completing a writing project, let us impress you with a $40 trial service.

The bad vegetarian: DoctorMyDocument's nutrition rant.

The only meat my person eats is the imitation crabmeat in crab cangoons. My person is a bad vegetarian. He eats cheese, and he would eat eggs if he wanted to, but he doesn’t like eggs.  But he does eat eggs sometimes. And he eats salmon sometimes, so I guess crab rangoons are not the only meat.

Anyway, the point is, my person knows better than to eat the shit food.  Sneaky people have built big businesses based on selling shit food to people dumb enough to eat it. WATCH OUT!!  Seriously.  Wake up and smell the capitalism.

Lately, I have been eating a lot of vegetables and fruits in the morning. I drink soy milk and almond milk. I drink a wicked lot of water every day, one ounce of water for every two pounds of bodyweight (Deepak Chopra’s recommendation, I think). So a 200 pound person needs 100 ounces of water every day.  It’s good to drink a giant glass of water as soon as you wake up every morning.

I can hardly believe my person has almost stopped eating meat, and I am not going to press my luck by asking the person to switch to an all raw food diet, or a vegan diet, or anything like that. And also, Andrew Weil says it’s important to eat some fish to get Omega 3 fatty acids, so I eat salmon. I think I can just go to the store and get an omega 3 supplement, though.  I don’t need to eat the salmon. My person is a bad vegetarian!

Academic Ninja (book #2): Scholarship & Admission Essay Strategy

"Long-term goals are for wussies. They are goals you believe are impossible in the short term.
A long-term goal does not make you feel a sense of urgency, but a short-term goal needs to be attacked right now. Short-term goals are the mark of a truly motivated person."

Academic Ninja (book #2): Scholarship & Admission Essay Strategy $8.50

SEE A PREVIEW of the book (it's just a screenshot...)

Writing this essay is a powerful exercise in self-analysis.  The student is trying to express what is important to her, what she wants to do to contribute to society. This essay is an important milestone in her personal development, because it is necessary for the student to communicate her PLAN for making a big splash in this world.
I don't care if the student gets accepted to her first choice college or even if she goes to college -- and neither should you, and neither should she.  College does not guarantee learning, and it does not guarantee a job.  However, it provides a lot of opportunity to explore one's interests and values so that the student can be the person she wants to be.  That is most important. Students should not be "rejected" by learning institutions; we should not even think that way. No matter what happens during this application process, she can stay focused on her goals and prevail.

And if the student is really determined to attend a particular college, we promise that this short ebook will give her an advantage.  How?  The kind of essay that makes the reader feel a real desire to provide every opportunity also happens to be the kind of essay that makes the student visualize a future as the kind of person she wants to be.  This is profound self-expression.

After getting through this ebook (20-30 pages of reading), the student can experiment with the techniques and improve her writing forever.  It only requires a few hours to read, and it only costs $8.50, so please make this small investment to provide her with a meaningful, memorable experience while she prepares to write these college essays and/or scholarship essays.

We will be so happy if you support DoctorMyDocument by making this small purchase. Also, please let us know if you run into any problems in the process of paying and getting your link to the product page.  After you pay, you should be automatically redirected to a page with a link the product and a password that enables you to access it.  (Share it with your friends!)

An opportunity to apply the psychology of language...

One of the most profound learning experiences comes when it is time for the student to write application essays (i.e. college admission, scholarships, internships, and other programs).  They challenge the student to dig deep and express what is most important to her or him.

If you support DoctorMyDocument by purchasing this ebook, you'll be investing in the quality of the student's experience of writing application essays. Writing this essay is a deeply personal experience, we wrote this book to enhance that experience.

Two reasons to visualize the future and make a plan:
  1. By writing about a clear, detailed vision of the future, the student becomes firm in her resolve to make a big splash in this world.
  2. By writing about a clear, detailed vision of the future, the student shows the reader that she is one of those rare, highly motivated difference-makers who knows exactly what she wants to do.
The importance of short-term goals:

Long-term goals are for wussies. They are goals you believe to be impossible in the short term. A long-term goal does not make you feel and sense of urgency, but a short-term goal needs to be attacked right now. A short-term goal is the mark of a truly motivated person.

"Reading Hypnosis" for Smokers-Trying-To-Quit

Read the first chapter online for free: "Changing Your Mind" (Reading Hypnosis)

Addicted to NOT Smoking:
A Hypnotic Trip into Cigarettelessness

Meditation, suggestions for transformation, spiritual renunciation, reading hypnosis… and there's a ninja!  This book provides an introspective trip for smokers-trying-to-quit.  Your guide during this strange jaunt toward cigarettelessness is the book's narrator, an emotionally disturbed ninja, and he seems eerily symbolic of something…  The ninja can feel comfortable without any ninja face-mask, and without hiding behind clouds of smoke; the reader can feel more comfortable with every page, every paragraph, narrowing the focus in a meditative state of mind.

In addition to entertainment and instruction, this book provides an experience of hypnosis consciousness—while reading—as the body responds to suggestions for relaxation and focus.  With entertaining, detailed instruction and poignant suggestions for change, it really is possible to "get addicted to not smoking."  Changing your mind is easy when the suggestions, stories, exercises, and instructions in this book send you reeling head-over-heels into hypnosis consciousness.

The smoker's struggle against addiction represents an existential crisis, and
The renunciation of cigarettes can be like a spiritual practice.

Meditation, self-hypnosis, and renunciation practice are related to the ancient, inner disciplines generally represented by the literary genre of meditation/mindfulness.  Plenty of books about meditation and mindfulness are already on the market; they are abundant and popular for a good reason (they ease the existential anguish that comes with mortality, helping us to keep our heads together during this weird trip).  Likewise, many books have been written for smokers trying to quit.  This manuscript is intended to fill a special niche in a giant market by applying the power of meditation/mindfulness literature to the vast market of smokers trying to quit. Addicted to Not Smoking is worth the price because it offers:

·         An opportunity for a surreal experience.
·         An opportunity to learn about self-hypnosis.
·         Funny reading that is relevant to the smoking habit.
·         A good gift for smokers trying to quit.

Of the available books for smokers trying to quit, Addicted to Not Smoking will be the one that has serious practices presented in a not-too-serious way.  People who continue to smoke even though they want to quit often have a not-too-serious desire to quit,[2] and this manuscript meets them at their own state of mind.
In Barnes & Noble's "addiction recovery" section, one quickly notices the books by Allen Carr: The Easy Way to Stop Smoking.  The fact that Carr sold more than seven million copies attests to the potential of this market.  (It also comes up first when you search Amazon for quit-smoking books.)  This is a classic, and Carr is a hero, but many people would choose Addicted to Not Smoking, instead, for its comedic value.
Deepak Chopra has two books for addiction recovery, but, lucky for me, neither is intended specifically for smokers.  In fact, most of the Barnes & Noble books in this section are about addiction recovery in general, and most of the ones that are about specific habits address alcoholism or compulsive eating; only Carr's books and a few others are specifically for smokers.

The person wants a cigarette, but you want to awaken as the timeless being.  The temporary person wants a cigarette, wants a snack, wants a compliment, wants to be entertained.  Even after the person gets something he or she wants, the wanting goes on and on.  This temporary person, all caught up in a dream, wants one thing after another until, finally, death.  But you are something more.  You are the great observer, that mysterious witness.  You are the creative being who dances in reality, now here, now there, always changing forms, yet always arising from the same place of stillness.  You dive into one dream after another, and in between dreams you awaken as the higher being, gradually and full of wonder.

At first, you identified with the person.  You became absorbed in the person's story while you ran around as him or her.  Now you are going through a process of dis-identification from the person.  You have begun to make a distinction between the higher being and the temporary person.  Just as the master transcends by means of an art or trade, just as the mystic transcends by the practice of meditation, just as the faithful believer transcends by offering the self to God, you, too, are starting to transcend the temporary reality of the person and awaken as the higher being.  You are discovering the power that comes from putting aside the wants of the person in favor of Creative Action, and you are enabling the higher being to emerge.

An invisible process is going on.  The secret knowledge, the knowledge you receive only after faithful practice, is this:

Renunciation practice enables you to remember your timeless self.

The master renounces the person's wanting by becoming absorbed in skillful action.  The mystic renounces the person's wanting by keeping still.  The faithful believer renounces the person's wanting by performing selfless work.  Renunciation of wanting enables them to remember.  When you establish your own firm practice of renunciation, you will begin to intuit the truth about your existence: that you have access to a source of unlimited creative power because, at the same time as you are being a person, you also remain a timeless, creative being.  In any moment, you can shift your attention to the place of stillness and be the being that is beyond the person, the being that has no beginning or end in time, but instead plays forever in the boundless world of creation.

A spiritual practice is one that cultivates your awareness of your existence independent of the person.  Spiritual seekers from every religious discipline have been using renunciation to achieve communion with the higher being.  Careful attention given to the spiritual act of renouncing the object of the person's wanting—cigarettes, in your case—changes your experience to that of the higher being: timeless, and not limited to the person.  This knowledge of yourself as the higher being, which can be cultivated by any practice of renunciation, is the source of your new power.

If you regard birth as your very beginning and death as some sort of an end, then time seems to be 'going by.'  If, instead, you see clearly that you are eternal, then you've never begun and you won't end.  Time stays right where it is.  Ride the present moment like a surfer on a wave and you can experience one, unending moment.  Whether you are moving around or sitting very still, eternity happens now.  You don't wait for Heaven; Heaven happens now, or not at all.  Eternity is timeless by definition.  We are not on a time line drawn in the direction of something called future—we are floating in the one, ongoing moment.

Renunciation Ninja

Here is a story to explain how smoking can get in the way of achieving your full potential.  The purpose of the story is to introduce to your person a new disposition toward the smoking habit.  Prepare to embrace change as it is applied to the very deepest beliefs held by the person!  Permit your person to act according to the true nature of things, letting go all illusions about smoking cigarettes. The story gives your person an alternative to his or her current ideas about smoking.  A funny metaphor sticks in the person's memory for a long time, creating change.  In this analogy, smoking cigarettes is compared to masturbation, and you are compared to a ninja.

Once upon a time there was a masturbating ninja.  He was a skillful ninja who could flip, and roll, and jump high, and kill you with a poisonous dart while hidden up in a nearby tree.  His ninja-ing was top-notch, very impressive.  Still, the other ninjas never took him seriously because of one compulsive habit that he couldn't seem to get over.  Something he did more consistently than anything else.

Consistently? Constantly.  Before and after every ninja mission, sometimes even during the missions, he had to pull out his little ninja sword and polish it like hell.  Thrashing around on the grass outside his ninja hut, it looked like he was wrestling with himself and losing.  Have you ever seen a ninja masturbate?  They really get into it.  Don't stand too close if you know what's good for you.

The other ninjas called him names and often kicked his ass.  They never let him join in any of their ninja games.  One day, the masturbating ninja couldn't take it anymore.  He made a sacred ninja vow not to take it out or even touch it under the cloth of his ninja costume from four o'clock Thursday afternoon until ten o'clock the following morning.  None of the other ninjas even applauded his effort.  They were very unsupportive.

When ten o'clock came around, the masturbating ninja had fulfilled his vow.  He was about to celebrate by yanking out his shit and having a real climactic battle with special effects and subtitles and everything when, all of a sudden, his ninja village was attacked by hundreds of enemy ninjas from an opposing ninja clan.  The masturbating ninja quickly removed his ninja nipple clamps and sprang to his feet with a spectacular ninja jump.  He left the video playing in his VCR and ran outside to help protect the village.

They were outnumbered and unprepared, and it seemed as if the enemy ninjas would surely defeat them.  One thing our hero had going for him, however, was that he was experiencing a tremendous surplus of energy and mental focus.  As he fought his way through the crowd, he realized that his skill and strength had doubled over night because he had not depleted it all over his ninja hut because of that compulsion, that habit.  His energy had built up so much that he felt invincible. Soon, he was fighting the attackers all by himself while his exhausted ninja friends watched in amazement.  He punched right through armor, caught bullets in his teeth, and beat off the enemies with quick, frantic movements.

The masturbating ninja had saved the day.  He had held back from indulgence and become the most powerful ninja of them all.  His heightened focus was far more rewarding than the immediate gratification he had sought in the past, so he started to make a practice of it.  His strongest urges to indulge and seek immediate gratification yielded the sharpest, most focused attention when he abstained.

See?  So, begin this process the way you would begin a rigorous workout, and know that you are building up your personal power.  You'll be exercising that inner sense of clarity and purpose called "will power," building up energy, weaning your body off nicotine, and cleaning out your lungs, all at the same time.

The most important thing is to have a feeling of taking action instead of trying to hold back from the act of smoking a cigarette.  Even though quitting will improve your life and delay your death, your previous attempts to quit smoking have been unsuccessful, because your state of mind changes every day, every minute.  You approach death gradually over a period of time, but your cigarette cravings occur in this moment.  What you need is a positive activity that you can apply to the moment—every time you think you want a cigarette.

Addicted to Not Smoking introduces a practice called "smoke-strike," with which you can begin to conquer this habit in the correct frame of mind.  Rather than fighting with yourself and using self-discipline, you will strengthen your spirit and gradually affect change in the mind until, one day very soon, you discover that you've risen above the whole shit.

"Adult Day Care" should be called by a different name.

Excuse me, can anyone explain why we use the term “adult day care” to refer to a service we provide for the wise elders of our society?  I don’t care how demented or forgetful I become; the little rug rats I am taking care of now had better not ever use the word “day care” on me when they have to return the favor.  If anybody actually gave enough of a crap, they would use a different term. Use any other term. You don’t have to call it anything at all, really.  But do not use the term "day care."  What the hell.

Calling them by a different name is the decent thing to do, and it is also practical. Google around about "adult day care," and you will find that it is common for seniors to feel that using such a facility is an insult to their dignity.

The point of creating adult day care centers is to make it possible for informal caregivers (usually family) to keep their jobs and leave the seniors in the care of professionals. Some focus on socialization, while others have rigorous medical care. Some are dedicated specifically to sufferers of Alzheimer's Disease. With all these functions, it is possible to use a different term to express their role in the lives of our eldest citizens.

Online Tutor: Writing Lessons for Kids

Don't we want the next generation of Americans to be excellent writers?

Whenever your child has an opportunity to write something, you tell her or him everything you like about it. That is what we do at DoctorMyDocument. Students send us their school papers, and we tell them everything that is great about the way they did it.

And for every TWO great qualities we see in the child's writing gives us the opportunity to teach them something. Why? Because after giving two compliments we have earned the right to teach them something.

Students do NOT like to submit a paper and have the teacher scribble all over it in red ink. Writing is art. Good teachers know this, but only the best teachers really know how to communicate with the child in a way that improves writing. It's like this:

  • Bad teachers give constructive criticism without taking the time to give compliments.
  • Good teachers often leave writing along, because they know it is art.
  • The best teachers give compliments TWICE AS OFTEN as they give constructive criticism, but this process takes a lot of time.

The result is that most students never learn to write well.  They might learn grammar, but they probably will not learn the finer points of efficiency, leading the reader's attention, doing strategic paragraph breaks, and adhering to their PURPOSE with vicious resolve.

Even the best teachers are not necessarily good writers, and even if they are they do not often have enough time to teach the finer points in school.  That is why DoctorMyDocument offers Strategic Writing Correspondence Lessons. Only the most eccentric parents would take time to arrange such lessons and pay the $25, but it is absolutely worth the effort.

If anyone pays for a correspondence lesson and does not feel that the student learned anything worthwhile, we absolutely will do a refund.  But the truth is that we will correspond with the student 2-3 times during each lesson, and this gives us the opportunity to give several pointers that they will remember forever.

Why will they remember the skills we teach? Because the Strategic Writing Correspondence Lesson is a novel experience, the kind of strange new experience that creates little moments never to be forgotten.

Why does a progressive president "move to the middle?"

Here is a rant that might help students understand the words being thrown around in American politics.
Please follow DoctorMyDocument for more useful discussions of political stuff.

Karl Marx noticed something: In capitalist system throughout history, more and more of the wealth will snowball in the hands of the few until almost all of the wealth is concentrated on a tiny portion of the population.  That is what is happening in America. People who understand capitalism and socialism know that neither is perfect.  Right now, the Obama Administration is trying to find the perfect balance that will bring about the greatest possible good for the greatest number of people.

The purpose of government is to enable people to give up a small amount of freedom in order to gain a large amount of protection.  It also helps them to pool their resources in various other ways and to look out for one another.  Conservatives call for self-reliance and free enterprise, and they are wise to preserve these important American values. But as people people who understand capitalism, they also know that an even playing field never stays even for long. Part of the role of government is to protect people from injustices inherent in capitalism.  That means the wealthy are going to have to pull the weight of the poor to some extent.

But President Obama is not Robin Hood. He cannot just take from the rich and give the poor. He has to move to the middle and reason with the rich and their advocates in congress. Most likely, he wants to reason with the rich because he is skillful with language. Masters of language want opportunities to reason with people and make real progress.

In order to be progressive, President Obama needs to make progress toward correcting social injustices associated with exploitation of the poor in a capitalist system. The wealthy people who represent large corporations may be very willing to help poor people, but they also need to stay vigorous and competitive in the dynamic 21st century business world. In order to make progress, Obama needs to compromise with the wealthy and with the representatives of wealthy organizations. After all, we are asking them to spend a higher percentage of their money than people in lower tax brackets, and the wealthy do not even use many of the social services they are helping to fund.

So, there are two voices to consider: the voice of the rich, and the voice of the rest of us.

The voice of the rest of us: One voice comes from the hard working American that tries to raise a family while making a lower-to-middle class living each year. These people want the government to spend money on the things that matter to them -- making health care affordable, ceasing American imperialism, creating jobs, growing the economy so the children will have good lives, saving the environment so the children will have places to live. These people want their tax money to be spent on the things that are important to them. Also, if they understand Keynesian economics, they also hope see the government spend money in order to compensate for a lack of public spending during a recession, and they want the government to make good investments, just like rich people do.

The voice of the rich: Another voice comes from the people who have plenty of money and do not need to "work" in the same way other people work. Instead, they invest their money in various endeavors, because they know you can make a lot of money if you invest correctly. These people also don't have to worry about whether they will be able to afford their health care. They have entirely different interests. For example, while working Americans may feel compassion for immigrants, even undocumented immigrants, the rich tend to focus on securing the borders because more poor Americans to take care of with expensive social services. They do not need to worry about whether public schools are adequately funded, because they don't send their kids to public schools. They do not need to worry about whether law enforcement in some districts is adequately funded, because they live in places where law enforcement in indeed adequately funded.

The rich care about things that can actually hurt them. What can hurt the rich? Other than taxes, nothing short of foreign invasion can hurt them. And that is why some rich people prefer not to spend money on social services, but they certainly are willing to spend money on maintaining a stellar military.

So why does a progressive president need to move to the middle? It's because a lot of pressure is being applied -- not only the visible pressure, but also the invisible pressure. Visible pressure is applied by the republicans, who advocate for the rich. Invisible pressure is also applied, because the rich have enough money to get what they want in clandestine ways. If the president wants to get the rich to spend money on improving the lives of the poor, he needs to accommodate some of their interests. That means compromising with the GOP. Without compromise, no progress would be made at all. Americans are sick of having legislators that cannot get anything done. As a master of language, President Obama is becoming a master of compromise.

What if I wrote a BORING essay?

This is a technique for after you have written a boring essay: Use your main idea as a “jumping off” point.

This is a technique for writing paragraphs that can pierce a person’s mental defenses against information overload. Even if people choose to read something, they often are unreceptive to it.  And as we discuss in the “speed reading” section of the Academic Ninja training course, people consciously choose how slowly and attentively they read. Your goal as a writer is to give the reader something so useful that they feel compelled to slow down and pay attention.

Everyone is filtering out most stimuli in this “age of information,” so you have to write something really useful in order to get them to be receptive.  To be useful, your writing has to go beyond the surface of ideas and take the reader deep into thought.  No statements-of-the-obvious are allowed.  No truisms are allowed (A truism is a kind of statement-of-the-obvious, a vague expression of some idea everyone already knows). Do not include any sentences with boring content, cliché, or anything that sounds like you are just trying to fill space.

The writing needs to be refined.  That is why I recommend writing your ideas and then using the whole draft as a “jumping off” point. Do not use this technique after you have written during moments of inspiration that cause the material to be rhythmic and infused with energy. Only use it with writing that lacks inspiration. If you had to write something during moments without inspiration, you can refine it by following these steps:
  1. Condense what you have written, taking out all words and sentences that are not useful, and when the essay is reduced and simplified as much as possible, reduce and simplify it even more.
  2. When you have condensed several paragraphs into one good one, use that paragraph as a “jumping off” point by looking at its meaning – its message to the reader – and writing about that concept.
Inspiration is a tricky wave to catch and keep your balance on, but you can take inspiration from the main idea that underlies your boring essay.  You wrote a boring essay because you wrote at a time when you were not inspired.  Talk when in a bad state of mind, and the listener feels it; write when in a bad state of mind, and the reader feels it.

But if you use this main idea, this theme, as a jumping off point, and if you find a moment of inspiration... you will soon have an energized essay full of those sacred sayings that come from that inspired state of mind.
