The editors will improve the English and make suggestions about how to structure sentences to get the desired result. Any time you write something in English, you can send it to DoctorMyDocument for improvement based on the principles of psychology and persuasion.

PsychologyOfLanguage
This website uses linguistic psychology to choose the words that feel better to read -- the words that motivate the reader to take action. Document editing is a meditative art, and linguistic psychology should be part of any online English editing service. If you know the benefits of meditation, you might want to hire professionals who share that knowledge. Any kind of work can be like 'meditation in action' and it can be a source of great ideas to help you achieve your goals.
Say Ellis, the owner of the site, compares the psychology of language to the 'Jedi mind trick': I always think of the part in Star Wars when Obi Wan Kenobi uses the Jedi mind trick and tells some imperial soldiers, “These are not the droids you are looking for.” And he hypnotizes the guy for a moment. That is the kind of powerful psychology I want for my document editing. Consider these Boston meditation practitioners when searching for an excellent online English editing service.

Jay's Online English Editing Service
'Reviews By Jay' was a humorous collection of product reviews by a retired English professor from Boston. He now applies his talent by ghostwriting and editing for people who need their English improved. He explains, "Many of our clients at Online English Editing Service have great ideas, but they sometimes struggle with English grammar, or they don’t feel sure about how to express their ideas in a way that’s professional and persuasive. That is where people find the usefulness of an online English editing service.

Jay and his associates will revise your content based on the collective ideas of everyone on his team. He promises, "We are sincere in our work, whether it is a very small job or a year worth of document editing." They specialize in helping English language learners express their ideas with clarity and confidence.

A disoriented incarnation of god.

Person - per·son/pərsən/Noun - A disoriented incarnation of god.

I was arguing with an atheist, and he said he had no reason to believe "god" exists.  But "god" is a word, and it refers to something I do believe in.

God is the word we use to name that being which is having a creative experience.  The being's motive for creation must be the same as my own motive, which is to make existence tolerable.

You can't deny the existence of a creative being having an experience. Here you are! And it would be egotistical of you to assert that you are the most powerful kind of creative being.  So what is far-fetched about a god-concept?  You are like a goddamn god walking around right now, muttering about how far-fetched it is to think some being like you could exist.

So, here we are as the "imagination of ourselves" (Bill Hicks said that...).

As you can imagine, it was an unforgettable experience, arguing with that atheist.  There I was, face-to-face with a disoriented incarnation of god... trying to convince Him that He exists!

;^) -- You know who you are, you idiot!

Reasons NOT To Believe the Government is a Puppet Show

Some people think all the lawmakers are just actors in a scripted play. They think a few very rich people set up this play and give us a struggle to watch: Dem v. Republicans.  A "puppet show" like that may be achieved a few years from now, but in 2011 you can see that a large-scale conspiracy like that still is not quite possible.

1.) Secrets are hard to keep. If the big financial interest groups were really calling the shots and the congresspeople were just actors, this would have to be a very large scale conspiracy with many people involved. Someone would blow the secret.

2.) Humans have been known to martyr themselves. Yes, even if you tell someone you'll kill him for revealing the conspiracy... humans have been shown historically to put themselves at risk based on their ideals.

3.) Yes, we still have ideals.  In the ongoing battle between good and evil, there may be a lot of conspiracies, but... good is not entirely dead yet.

MANY government officials are bought and paid for, sure.  And that is why we need people like Elisabeth Warren, Obama, Bernie Sanders... fearless idealists willing to poke the beast in the eye.

Do you get it?  Good is not entirely dead yet! It is not realistic to think no one would disrupt the puppet show.

**** Also, here is a gift you can get for your kid. It'll help her in school....

Can a man be a feminist?

Of course a man can be a feminist!

People think I'm joking when I tell them I am a feminist. I guess they think guys can't be feminists. But this is not, like, boys against the girls in the game of global hegemony; we should just be rational. Women are better leaders.

I'm not saying women are good decision-makers or anything like that. They are goddamn crazy. But men are, too. Men and women are irrational and foolish in completely different ways, but letting a woman make the big decisions... well, it's just a safer bet.
  • Women lash out by using a guilt trip and making you feel bad. Men lash out by punching or shooting each other.
  • Women produce a hormone called oxytocin that is associated with feelings of nurturing. Men produce a hormone called testosterone that is associated with aggressiveness and competitiveness.
Humans are nutty, completely batshit. But in light of the differences between male crazy and female crazy, it seems a lot better to have a woman calling the shots for a while. Patriarchal ideas are so deeply rooted in our society that people don't even realize it. If women were the leaders and lawmakers in every country, it would be a completely different world.

If you agree that a man can (and should) be a feminist, maybe you would like to continue the conversation by following DoctorMyDocument, the coolest blog on the Internet.

Why are liberals frustrated with Obama?

I just want to share this, because this morning I thought about it in a new way.

I think nobody ever talks about their progressive or conservative ideologies in Washington. What is there to say? They all know what they want, and they help each other get what they want. They all want to satisfy their supporters.

All those cronies (both parties) just hash it out in discussion, and they speak plainly about how they can all come out ahead.

"You know damn well we need to do XX or our base is going to crucify us."
"Yes, but if we let you do that, we will look weak, and you know it."

Some are getting bribed, while others are just trying to get re-elected, but they all share a common experience: They are doing what people have always done when they have a lot to gain or lose.  They say to each other, "Okay, let's just stop and think about this for a minute."

The politicians do what rich people do when a rivalry begins.  They work out an agreement.  One rich guy says to the other, "Look, we both have a lot of money. Let's squash this little argument and go eat some truffles."

It's the same among politicians. Behind closed doors, they all discuss their respective narratives and needs, and together they figure out what is best for each of them. The lawmakers have no incentive to do anything real; it's all about appearances.

So, for example, right now Obama is arguing with the GOP about a deal for raising the debt ceiling.  All the progressive people want Obama to hold his ground for once and not cave in to their demands. But the only reason people are frustrated with him for "caving in" in the past (i.e. extending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, etc.) was because of this same phenomenon described above: Obama wanted to take progressive action, so he agreed to let the GOP seem like they were kicking his ass.

And in this current (theatrical) debate about the debt ceiling, they are just working out a deal where all of them get to look good.  One side asks for enormous concessions, the other side concedes, and at the end of the day they just do what enables them to all look good to their constituents and the big financial interests whose junk they are secretly sucking.

But the difference is that Obama is an idealist, and that is why he has had a surprisingly productive presidency. How many times have you heard liberals expressing frustration with Obama?  It's because they don't recognize his wisdom.  He has high aspirations, so he does not even give a crap about looking good.  In the Tao Te Ching, something is specifically mentioned about the fact that if you are popular with others, you are probably a goddamn liar.  (Not in those exact words)

So, yeah. Obama has had the most legislatively productive first term of any president in like 60 years or something. Don't quote me on that, I just heard it somewhere, and I'm not trying to be a big shot fact checker.  How do you measure that sort of thing, anyway? Legislative productivity, I mean.

The point is, he has wisdom. Obama got the GOP to agree to all sorts of stuff by allowing them to save face -- and because the average citizen barely pays attention to the news, it is easy to frame the whole thing in a way that allows the GOP to look like a bunch of bad asses telling Obama what to do.

So, remember, the politicians in congress are just like the rich people eating crumpets.  They say, "Hey, lets try to make this as easy on one another as possible." It's easy and typical for politicians to help one another look good.

That's why every time you hear a liberal complaining about Obama, it should remind you that he is a little different.

How to start a sentence with the words "I believe."

What is the correct way to start a sentence with the words "I believe?"

The correct way is to omit that stupid, awful phrase.
I believe the best way to catch a ninja is to use some sort of humane trap that is not likely to cause injury.

Just cut it right out of the sentence:
I believe The best way to catch a ninja is to use some sort of humane trap that is not likely to cause injury.

So, that is the lesson for today. Kill that awful, little phrase.  When you say “I believe,” it is like saying, “This may not be true, but believe it is true.”

You have a more powerful sentence when you just state what you believe.  You do not have to qualify your assertion as something YOU believe. If you are saying it, you clearly believe it.

If you want to look at a more serious example, consider this line from a professional letter:
I believe my areas of interest and specialized knowledge enable me to find real inspiration for this kind of work.

Cut it out:
I believe my My areas of interest and specialized knowledge enable me to find real inspiration for this kind of work.

Even if you see it in the middle of the sentence, cut it out:
My areas of interest and specialized knowledge enable me to find real inspiration for this kind of work, and I believe my own values are consistent with those of your fine organization.

Cut out those two awful words, and your sentence will pack a harder punch. :-)

Strategies for Grad Students: Hail to the Jewel in the Center of the Journal Article!

Cheers to the jewel in the center of the lotus.  That's some Buddhism for you.  What is the jewel in the center of an article you are looking at during your research?

It is a single goddamn sentence.

When you look at a research article, the guy might have written 30 pages of analysis, but he probably has only one sentence, one message.  The message is a single sentence, and the rest of the article is just there to explain, elaborate, and substantiate the big idea.

So... when you are feeling overwhelmed by thousands of pages of journal articles as you work toward your degree or whatever you are doing, keep this in mind: Each article has only one big idea. Skim to it.  Get to the point.

That is the jewel in the center of the article.

One book/article = One Big Idea

Peer-reviewed, professional journal articles and books by scholars represent these ongoing conversations that take place among the people in any given professional field.  It's just a conversation. Don't let it get you overwhelmed.

Just glean that big idea from each article, and jump into the conversation by writing a meaningful article of your own.

Ninja Parenting for Behavior Modification with Toddlers

Okay, here we go. Some people disagree with my parenting strategy for toddlers, but to hell with those people.

You use that good old behavioral psych. I hate behavioral psych, but it sure works. If they are doing something wrong, you make them have something bad happen that they don’t like.

But you don’t hit or yell at them. You are the grownup, so you can outsmart the little twerp. The toddler does not even see you pull the rug out from under him, and he hits the floor. Bang!

People say that is abusive, but is it really as traumatic as seeing your dad yelling “No!” with a scowl on his face?

You tell me I am abusive if I cause an accident to happen every time the kid gets out of line – for example, the rug comes out from under him, or something heavy falls on him – but that is not abusive. Accidents happen all the time whether I am there or not. In fact, if I was not there, the kid would have a lot more accidents.

So I say let the kid get whapped in the back of the head by some unseen projectile. You do not have to be the one to shout at the kid. If you shout at the kid every time he tries to get something he is not supposed to have… the kid will resent you and resist everything you say to him. Some asshole is reading this and judging me, thinking I am abusive for causing accidents to happen to the kid – but that same judgmental prick is going to become associated in his child’s mind with lots of negative experiences, like getting yelled at, being prevented from getting what you want, etc.

So, if you do not want your kid to resent you, do what I do: Trip the kid up in a sneaky way. You can literally trip him, or you can cause him to get hit by something. Then, you can be the one to pick him up, dust him off, and redirect him.

Ha ha, and one last thing: Parents should not say negatives to a kid. Kids don’t really understand negatives so well. A clear, positive activity is what you need. For example, it is more effective to tell a young child, “Play in the yard,” than it is to say, “Do not go on the street.” The first phrase brings his attention to the yard; the second phrase brings his attention to the street. Very clear instructions about taking positive action are easier to follow than abstract, negative instructions.

Most importantly, do not give the kid the stimulation he is seeking with his negative attention seeking behavior. No emotional reaction, only a swift consequence! Whap! But the trick is to never let the child know it was you who clobbered him with a couch cushion. All the kid will know is that he got knocked down all of a sudden.

And you were there to pick him back up after the fall.

Maybe this will save the smoker...

Addicted to NOT Smoking:
A Hypnotic Trip into Cigarettelessness

A www.DoctorMyDocument.com Publication

DoctorMyDocument.com will donate 50% of all proceeds to Action Against Hunger.
We wrote this book with the intention to introduce helpful new ideas into the mind of 'the person'.  The 'person' is discussed as something slightly separate from you -- like a pet that depends on you to take care of it. Similar to the way a hypnotist helps to reprogram the mind, you can read from this book a little each day as a way to RENEW your strong intention to be a former smoker.

Here are a few excerpts...

Changing Your Mind
with
Hypnosis Consciousness

Born into a mysterious world that is too much to fathom, a life with no explanation, we grab hold of cigarettes the way a shipwrecked sailor grabs hold of a wooden plank in order to keep afloat.  A pack of cigarettes in your pocket is something that you can be sure of, and it helps you to cope with all the uncertainty of being a person.  Unfortunately, the sense of security that you find in cigarettes is a false one.  They’re killing you, actually.

Reading Hypnosis: Rest in your practice.
Breathe easy.  Relax your face and shoulders.  Loosen away any tension that you might be holding in the chest area.  A subtle trance occurs naturally while you read, and you can deepen the trance by deliberately sharpening your focus until you achieve slender, pinpoint precision.  Cooperate with the trance, and go deeper into the stillness of the moment.  To stay with the reading and the sound of your breathing is so much easier than letting your mind wander.  These words are good for you, so do not read them with your ordinary, wide-awake discernment—let your guard down.  Let your attention float slowly across the page with each breath.
Spacious Mind: A workspace for changing your mind.
This is where you free your person of the burdensome compulsion to judge and analyze every little thing, constantly missing the present moment and its vivid truth because of the distracting rant of the mind.  Listen to the sound of your breathing as you read.  There is a moment when the inhalation stops and the exhalation has yet to begin, like the moment of stillness when a ball thrown up in the air has stopped ascending but has not yet started to fall.  Within and between all movements of breath and body, there is the entirety of life—and life can be pleasure.  The volume of life’s pleasure can be turned up until it overwhelms the comparatively minor discomfort of nicotine withdrawal.  It is as simple as changing your mind.

Smoke-Strike: Like a hunger-strike, this is a practice of renunciation.
Resolve to be free of the habit for a few hours tomorrow.  The habit began when an occasional cigarette provided a temporary escape from your tired old routine.  No nicotine dependence had developed yet, so you smoked for other reasons.  When you first tried cigarettes you were trying something new, something exciting.  But cigarettes are not new anymore, are they?  Your relationship to cigarettes has changed completely.  Now they have become part of the tired old routine, and they offer enjoyment only in the form of relief from the physical discomfort associated with nicotine craving.  Your relationship to cigarettes has changed in such a way that, now, not to smoke would be an escape from the tired old routine.  Imagine that.

Creative Action: You can choose to be active or passive in any moment.
The extent to which you inhabit your own mind is the extent to which you can be an active creator of life.  Act according to your will rather than serving the impulsive, monkey-mind of the person, and you can create life as you go, shaping your life situation by gently manipulating the unfolding of events in the present moment.  If you act on every little passing impulse, you’ll be busy like an overworked servant.  A slave.  Don’t be a slave to the monkey-mind’s thousands of stupid little thoughts (they have nothing to do with you), because you’ll be too busy to create anything; you will not be an active participant.  You’ll end up like the lonely kid sitting with no one to dance with, benched on the sidelines of life.

Hypnosis Consciousness: Where subject and object meet.
You are awareness looking out at the world through the eyes of a person.  Humanity changes according to ideas that have been entertained, and your own life also changes according to ideas.  Hypnosis is the technique for accessing a deep place in consciousness, the place where subject and object meet, and introducing ideas.  The quality of your attention is what determines your ability to influence the changes that will happen in the world and in the person.  Strength of concentration is the necessary trait, the one that lets you co-create instead of suffering through life with no control.

Subtle Hypnosis While Reading
A subtle trance occurs naturally while you read. Rhythmic Breathing and Reading Hypnosis, used together deliberately, can be strong medicine while you are in that refined state of awareness. Allow a subtle trance to heighten the receptivity of this person through whose eyes you see. Enjoy the trance. Cooperate with it, and go deeper into the stillness of the moment. Enjoy the lightness that comes from freeing the mind of the burdensome compulsion to think and judge, constantly missing the present moment and its vivid truth because of the distracting rant of the mind.
You can access deeper levels by listening to suggestions spoken by a hypno-therapist, or you can access them by listening to suggestions recorded on tape. You can also access deeper levels by using the pro-active technique called “self-hypnosis,” which is covered in chapters four, five, and six. You will listen to the suggestions for change as they are spoken by the voice of “wisdom-mind.” Unlike monkey-mind, the “wisdom-mind” purposefully directs the person’s attention; in Chinese philosophy, the wisdom mind is likened to a “general,” or a well-trained “horse” in Chinese medicine and philosophy.1 To turn the mind into a voice that takes you deeper into the moment (instead of distracting you, as it usually does) is a powerful practice. The voice of wisdom mind becomes the voice of your hypno-therapist when you practice self-hypnosis.
Aside from the practice of self-hypnosis, there is also another way to use horse-mind: By reading the suggestions and hearing them spoken by wisdom-mind, while feeling the movement of the breath and the movement of the eyes across the page, you engage the person’s senses so that he or she can go very deep into the moment. At a very deep level, the person hears horse-mind reading the suggestions for change in the Transformation Pages.
To spend several minutes reading this (or any other) book puts a person in a unique, receptive state of consciousness. The process of reading reinforces that receptivity, and then the Transformation Pages—with rhythm and peculiar ideas that capture the person’s attention and carry it along—drum beneficial suggestions in the mind with subtle rhythm. The time that you spend reading this book will send the person, with her blackened lungs and polluted body, doodling down the road to recovery.

The company was founded in 2005 and is operated by a group of writers who share a particular philosophy of "strategic writing," which is a combination of art and applied psychology.  Clients of DoctorMyDocument.com can submit any piece of writing to be improved based on the principles of "purposeful" communication: the psychology of persuasion, the elements of style in composition, and neuro-linguistic programming.

Some of the characteristics of the DoctorMyDocument style of strategic writing include:
  • Efficiency: Using more words than necessary is like throwing many punches just to land a few.
  • Memorable Theme: Introduce a concept intended to "stick" in the reader's mind.
  • Rhythm: Soothe the reader's senses with some syllables that sing. Choose the words that rock you like a boat.
  • Embedded Commands: Design sentences that include subliminal messages to be heard only by the reader's subconscious mind.
  • Repetition: Do you think you'll remember to tell friends about "Doctor My Document" if you see it one more time?

Changing Your Mind
This moment, you can go the right way.  You can take the path of a slightly different you, very much like the existing you, except without the cigarettes.  Changing your mind is delicate work.  It’s like brain surgery without the surgery.  It’s like cleaning an oven, only it’s a self-cleaning oven, so it cleans itself, but that is really hard for an oven to do.  Well, you know what I mean.

Tic, toc, tic, toc, you spill into reality, moment after moment.  Tic, toc, tic, toc, your person mixes in with everything else.  The world is constantly changing.  The person is constantly changing.  Subtle manipulations can be made if you are sneaky enough.  Are you sneaky enough?  Guide the person.  Tell her what she wants to hear.  Be nice to her, so that she feels very comfortable.  The way to make change happen for the person you call “me” is to direct that person, gently and sneakily, according to your will.  Repeat instructions over and over while the person is calm, while “monkey-mind” is sleeping.

Why Should I Try a 1,000-Word Bio?
Just as a painter of portraits creates art based on what she or he sees, our professional writers take inspiration from the messages, photos, and any other information you want to send us as the basis for a "portrait painted in words."

Aspiring to be People-Researchers, we create biographical sketches that capture unique truths about the lives of real people. With the help of their friends and family, we created Mini-Biographies of various lengths, and we are beginning to discover that people really do care enough about one another to have aspects of their lives captured in a Gift Biography.

YOU can decide the length & set the direction for a biographical "portrait" by providing the information and instructions to guide us in our writing. As artists, we must follow our creative inclination in the presentation of the stories, but we will try hard to make them exactly right according to your ideas and preferences. We look forward to writing for you!

    EXAMPLE 1
    A Perspective on Stanley Davis:
Stanley’s Stepson Expresses Appreciation & Understanding

Stanley Davis of North Brookfield, Massachusetts
A man who has played the role of provider in the lives of many people

The life of a person cannot be summed up in a few pages.  We can have a glimpse, though, from a single perspective.  In this biographical sketch, Matthew Reynolds shares his perspective on Stanley Davis, his stepfather.

Seven years have passed since the day Matthew heard the news that Stanley had proposed to his mother.  As an honest man who has experienced hard work ranging from the military to entrepreneurship, Stanley is a stepfather of whom anyone would feel proud.  Matthew had also felt relieved, because his mother needed a source of strength and inspiration at that time. Her own parents had recently passed away, and she had also been going through a messy divorce.

Matthew’s first impression of Stanley was that he was a man with the sort of wisdom that can make a person both serious and joyful.  Stanley grew up in the years following World War II, and his parents had lived through the Great Depression, so he learned to appreciate honest work and family values.  Stanley found great success in business, but he also found disappointment and misfortune.  The material wealth that comes and goes is not so important, but the struggle to make ends meet through trying times is a forging process that refines the personality.  Stanley impressed Matthew as a person with well-developed wisdom and the ability to generate joy even under difficult circumstances.

Circumstances have indeed been difficult.  In the years since Matthew met Stanley and became his stepson, Stanley has made tremendous sacrifices to take care of three young foster children.  When Stanley married Matthew’s mother, he did not know that they would be taking custody of three children who had suffered abuse and neglect.  For five years, Stanley and Matthew’s mother put aside their own needs to help the children heal.  These foster parents even saw their marriage suffer at times because of unavoidable stress associated with raising young children.

When relationships are strained by difficult life circumstances, good intentions and actions are sometimes misunderstood. From Matthew’s perspective it is clear that some of Stanley’s effort goes unnoticed because of the chaotic environment at home.  How can the self-sacrificing hero end up playing the role of the villain?  How can a foster parent, who has depleted his own energy through acts of selfless dedication, be viewed like a “strict” or “stubborn” tyrant?

Sometimes upholding family values seems old fashioned.
Sometimes teaching good behavior seems overbearing.
Sometimes being practical seems like being pushy.
Sometimes having high standards seems like being stubborn.

    Sometimes wisdom is left unrecognized.

Sometimes the person who provides for everyone seems like he is overbearing when he actually just knows the importance of discipline and responsibility. Matthew’s perspective on Stanley is like the perspective of a student on a teacher.  Matthew is a good student, and he is able to recognize the virtues of his stepfather even when other people are not able to recognize them.  Stanley obviously is doing what he knows how to do in order to make ends meet and ensure that everyone is provided for… but the difficulty faced by people inside and outside Stanley’s household can become a source of conflict; when life is overwhelming people in the household, all the self-sacrifice in the world is not good enough to please everyone.

Difficult times and hectic days have drained a lot of energy from Stanley and his wife, and it is a shame that their great accomplishments as foster parents can be drowned out sometimes by their stress and nervous tension.  Matthew’s perspective enables him to see the situation as it really is; some people really do understand the need for practicality, for proactive effort, and a man who can teach others by his example – even when they do not understand his reasons.

Stanley is a man who has an entire lifetime of experience behind him, a skilled craftsman who has lived powerfully and honestly.  Before Matthew met Stanley, Stanley had already accomplished much and contributed to the lives of many people.  Now, after seven years as a husband to Matthew’s mother and a guardian of Matthew’s nieces and nephew, “appreciation” is not a strong enough word to express what Matthew feels toward Stanley.  Tremendous respect is sometimes called “reverence,” and tremendous gratitude is sometimes expressed in poetic ways – but Stanley already knows that lots of people feel respect and gratitude toward him.  Instead, Matthew wants to express understanding:

Matthew knows that Stanley is a misunderstood hero.  Events never unfold quite as we intend them, but we find meaning for our struggle when we reflect on the good that it does for others.  Heroes don’t need to be understood; they just need opportunities to give of themselves.  When the work is done, they rest.

    EXAMPLE 2
A Biographical Sketch of Mary Arnold:
    Powerful Living, No Regrets

Mary Arnold is a retired customer service representative who is enjoying the freedom that comes with life mastery after 72 years.

Mary heard that we were doing a biographical sketch of her, and she responded with sideways humor: “You’re not going to find any dirt on me, and if you do, you can’t prove anything!” she wrote.  She was right; as hard as we tried, we could not find any dirt. Digging into the life of Mary Arnold, we found only good news about great accomplishments and contributions to the people and places she has touched, in central Massachusetts and beyond.
Mary is notorious for sticking to her personal principles even when other people have tried to compel her to abandon them.  From 1993 to 1997 she worked as a customer service representative for an auto parts company, her boss tried to compel her to lie to a customer about some motor oil.  Mary refused, and her boss threatened to fire her.  Mary told him that he could fire her if that was his decision, but she would not lie to the customer.  She did lose her job because of this incident.

We asked Mary about the incident at the auto parts business, and Mary told us it had a funny conclusion. “They wanted me to teach a new girl how to use my computer and do my job,” she said.  “I turned the power off and told my boss to figure it out himself!”

From the perspectives of her children, Mary is source of pride and encouragement.  According to Mary’s daughters, her example leaves them no excuse to ever become overwhelmed with life.  “Whenever anyone is having a rough time with work or relationships,” says her daughter Tanya, “Our mom is an example of stability and steadiness.  We all use her as a reference point.” Perhaps that reflects Mary’s personality, or perhaps it reflects the leadership role that she has played for her children.

From the perspective of Barbra Faucet, Mary’s friend of fourteen years, Mary has an uplifting personality-type – “the kind that makes people feel better after spending time with her.”  One of Mary’s co-workers at the hospice, Anthony, is starting med school, and he knows that as a physician he will be coming back to the hospice to play a leadership role.  He says Mary will continue to be among his most important teachers no matter how far he goes with his education in medicine.
Mary says she wants to use this mini-biography as an opportunity to remind her family to enjoy the simple things in life, because “life can be dangerous,” and, “it’s just not worth taking chances.”  This is the kind of admonition that comes from a person who has seen much of the good and bad that life has to offer.  “Appreciating the most meaningful things, we don’t have to take chances,” Mary says. “We can just enjoy one another and take it easy.”

    EXAMPLE 3

    A Perspective on Martin Denesha:
Success Varies According to One’s Values

Until recently, Martin Denesha was a furniture salesman with a large chain of furniture retailers.  Now he has moved on to try his hand at cooking. “My heart was never really in it,” he says about furniture sales.

Before changing jobs, Martin made one of his most interesting personal accomplishments – the kind of accomplishment that makes life meaningful.  The story took place when Martin was trying to sell a “Lift-Chair” to an elderly lady.

A Lift-Chair is a mechanical chair that helps a person to stand up by raising up and lifting the person onto her feet.  Four months ago, before Martin quit his job, he received a phone call from a prospective customer who needed a ride to the furniture store.  When Martin arrived at her house, she told him that she had a strict budget of seven hundred dollars to spend on a lift chair, which she badly needed.

Martin knew that his store only sold lift chairs for a thousand dollars or more, but he took her to the store hoping to work out a way to make the sale. Without making enough sales, he would not make very much money, and he could even lose his job.  After being shown around the store, the woman told Martin that the expensive lift chairs were just not within her budget and that she was sorry for wasting his time.

Martin knew he could not make the sale.  To make matters worse, he knew that a different furniture store a few miles away did offer the “lift” chair within this customer’s budget. Part of Martin’s job was to know what deals were being offered by the competitors, so he was aware that this woman could buy a lift chair with massage, heat, and a lifetime warrantee with her seven hundred dollars.

While driving this customer home, Martin was thinking about this, and about how he probably would never be a very good salesman.  Resolving himself to the situation, Martin asked the woman if she wanted to visit a store where she might have better luck.  She agreed, and Martin took her to the competition to help her find the perfect chair.

Martin spent a large part of his work day helping this customer when he could have been helping customers that could generate a commission for him and a profit for the store.  He knew he was breaking various rules by spending so much time with her, but he did it anyway.  Refusing to pressure customers, Martin proved to be less valuable to his employer, and he ultimately lost his job in furniture sales.  He sure did help that lady find her “lift” chair, though!

Martin’s children are proud of their father, and they take example from his strong integrity.  Other salesmen might have made more sales, and they might have even made six-figure salaries, but Martin made something even better. He made an elderly lady happy, he made his family proud, and he made his work meaningful.
